Beyond copywriting: Why creative marketing can take many forms
When people think about marketing, they often picture social media posts, websites, brochures or adverts.
And while I absolutely love creating those, sometimes the most memorable projects are the ones you never expected to work on.
One of those projects came about through my work with The Wessex Flock, a local Hampshire farm with a passion for sharing the story of British wool and inspiring more people to get creative.
It all started with a colouring book.

Turning photographs into creativity
The Wessex Flock wanted something a little different for visitors to enjoy, particularly families attending markets and events.
Using photographs of their own sheep, lambs and farm life, I transformed the images into a colouring book that could be enjoyed by children and adults alike.
Colouring is about much more than keeping children occupied. It encourages creativity, helps people slow down and provides a mindful activity away from busy screens and daily distractions.
Seeing the farm's own animals brought to life as colouring pages made the project even more personal and helped create a lasting connection with visitors.
Making crafts accessible
That project naturally led to another.
The Wessex Flock wanted people to enjoy working with their wool products at home, so I created a series of clear, easy-to-follow instruction leaflets.
The first showed people how to make their own felted sheep, taking them through each stage with simple instructions and photographs. Whether someone had tried felting before or was picking up wool for the first time, the aim was to make the activity feel achievable and enjoyable.
We then expanded the range with an instruction leaflet for knitting your own headband, again using straightforward language and a clean design to give beginners the confidence to have a go.
Sometimes, the success of a product isn't just the product itself, it's helping people feel confident enough to use it.
Good communication makes everything easier
Writing instruction guides requires a slightly different approach to traditional copywriting.
The language needs to be simple, the order needs to make sense, and each step should build naturally on the previous one. Good design is equally important, making information easy to follow without overwhelming the reader.
It's about putting yourself in someone else's shoes and asking, "If I'd never done this before, what would I need to know?"
That's exactly the same principle I use whether I'm writing a website, creating a leaflet or developing a communications campaign.
Every project tells a story
One of the reasons I love running Donna Creative is that no two weeks are ever the same.
One day I might be writing a website for a charity, the next developing a marketing strategy, and then creating a colouring book or craft guide for a local farm.
Every project is different, but they all have one thing in common: helping organisations communicate clearly, engage their audience and create something people genuinely enjoy.
Sometimes marketing isn't about selling.
Sometimes it's about creating an experience, building a connection and giving people something they'll remember long after they've put the colouring pencils away.
Could your next marketing project look a little different?
Whether it's a website, a brochure, an instruction guide, a colouring book, or something completely unique, great communication is about creating content that connects with your audience.
