5 social media mistakes that could be costing you clients
Social media is one of the most powerful tools for growing your business, but only when it’s used effectively.
I often speak to small businesses and charities who are posting regularly but not seeing results. The issue usually isn’t effort… it’s approach.
Here are five common social media mistakes that could be costing you clients, and what to do instead.
1. Posting without a clear plan
If your strategy is “post when I remember,” you’re not alone, but it’s not sustainable.
Without a clear plan, your content becomes inconsistent, reactive and disconnected from your business goals.
What to do instead:
Create simple content pillars (your core themes) and map out your posts weekly. This gives your content structure and purpose.
2. Focusing on selling in every post
If every post is “buy now,” your audience will switch off. Social media isn’t just a sales channel, it’s a relationship-building tool.
What to do instead:
Aim for a balance:
- Educational content
- Engaging/relatable posts
- Sales messages
Trust first, sales second.
3. Unclear messaging
If someone lands on your profile, can they instantly understand:
- What you do?
- Who you help?
- Why it matters?
If not, you’re likely losing potential clients.
What to do instead:
Simplify your messaging. Focus on clarity over cleverness.
This is something I cover in more depth in my LinkedIn training sessions, helping you turn your profile into a clear, confident business tool.

4. Inconsistent posting
Posting three times one week and then disappearing for a month won’t build momentum. Consistency builds visibility and trust.
What to do instead:
Set a realistic schedule you can stick to, even if that’s just 2–3 times per week. Or, if time is a challenge, this is where outsourcing can make a big difference.
5. Not Reviewing What’s Working
Many businesses post content but never check what performs well. Without insights, you’re guessing, and guessing costs time and opportunities.
What to do instead:
Look at your analytics monthly. Identify:
- What gets engagement
- What drives clicks
- What falls flat
Then adjust your approach.
